Public Art Position in ’life aesthetics ‘

Mr. Liu Yuedi

April 13, 2013 13:00 pm, "Metro Public Art" sub-forum was held at 2nd floor of Triumph Palace Hall C of Gu Cun Park Hotel. Professor Cao Yijiang, Convener of the Artistic Disciplines Consultative of the State Council, Dean of College of Arts and Humanities of China Academy of Art, hosted the forum. Associate Professor Liu Yuedi, Institute of Philosophy of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, made a speech entitled " Public Art Position in ’life aesthetics ‘ ".

Mr. Liu Yuedi thought that the nature of public art was relative to the public. We could take public art return back to the life aesthetic. On the one hand public art was an Oxymoron built up with the principles of modern art and aesthetic theory, and gradually extended to the boundaries of contemporary art. On the other hand, because public art appeared out of the art world, it was relative to the public space and the public interesting. There was a question whether we have to think about public art position again in the view of Chinese aesthetics.

Mr. Liu Yuedi used "permanent Monroe", "Titled Arc", "Vietnam Veterans Memorial" and other well-known works of public art as examples to explore the following questions. “Dose public interest influence the public art? Or vice versa?" " Dese it mean the public art is failure in an aesthetic point of view if public art works are rejected by the wider community,? "," Who have the right to decide public art?”, etc.
