The Role Of Public Art In Urban Development

Prof. Wang Shouzhi

On April 12, 2013, at 4:00 PM, professor Lu Xiaobo, Dean of Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University chaired the themed forum of “public art and the urban development". Professor Wang Shouzhi,Dean of Yangtz School of Art and Design, Shantou University gave a speech of "the role of public art in urban development ". He thought that, since the reform and opening up policy began, public art in China made relationship with the cities. When the Chinese city residents had a relatively strong public awareness of the situation gradually, public art in China will move toward to a necessarily challengeable process.

Professor Wang Shouzhi pointed out; public art could be classified into several categories: one category can be described as the art owned by the public. However, all the art works is the public ownership here, since the whole country is our representatives." Another is public participation in art works. The third category is public art that government puts emphasis and investment on, and this is something that a city must own. The last but not least for the promotion of public art is to improve people's aesthetic ability, so public art could be something with public participation and public creation process.
