Located in the new Australia Garden outside the National Gallery of Australia, the partly subterranean installation creates an immersive viewing experience that uses space, shape and light to affect the perception of the sky. This artwork’s shape is like a pyramid. At the centre of the pyramid, a pool of turquoise water flows around a central chamber, a stupa. The elegantly simple domed space interior has a bench around the edge encouraging visitors to linger and reflect. The roof is framed by an oculus. A moonstone,
set into the centre of the floor, echoes the aperture above. Within without draws from and responds to its surroundings, allowing its audience to become both aware of and connected to their natural environment. It asks visitors to linger, to watch, absorb and reflect. It offers artlessness, simplicity, unhurried perception.

Open to visitors from dawn until late in the evening, Within without allows its audience to sit in what amounts to stage for diurnal celestial cycles, and alerts its audience to the clear and sometimes harsh natural light of Canberra, a quality unique to this setting. This artwork helps us re-learn how to see and experience one of the most simple and all encompassing things of life: light.
