Greetings

On behalf of The Institute for Public Art (IPA) in partnership with Shanghai University College of Fine Arts, I would like to welcome you to this seminar 20-23 November 2014. The aims of the IPA are to research the forms of public art and propagate knowledge about them; to create and maintain a network of professionals concerned for public art; and to advocate public art to potential clients such as developers and city halls.

Art in public space differs greatly from one region and country to another – the conditions of 'public space', and even the convention of 'art' itself being understood very differently in different cultures. This variety creates a challenge to researchers who would like to propagate knowledge about public art practices, compare them with each other, and advocate those that are most successful in their own cultural contexts.

This seminar brings together people, from many countries around the world, who are involved in research about art in public space, and in particular artist-led place-making.

During the seminar, we will look at some case studies of art in public space. We shall discuss the research criteria and methods that have been developed for the International Award for Public Art (IAPA), and the format in which the research is presented. We shall review the geographic / cultural 'regions' developed by the IPA in relation to research for the IAPA. If we have time, we shall discuss advocacy to city halls and developers and how best to exchange information among artists and professional agencies.

Our priority is to further develop and clarify the guidelines for research towards the 2017 IAPA.

But we also confidently expect that during these days, so generously hosted by Shanghai University, our discussions about issues and concerns of mutual interest will augment and nourish our existing network of researchers.

Chairman, IPA
