在一段废弃的高架铁路上创造出凌驾街道上空的立体公园，融合了三个历史时期的特征，成为一条历史与现代共融、建筑与景观交织的空中绿廊。

空中步道利用工业基础设施作为公共绿色空间。这里原先是一段废弃的高架铁路，在利用和改造铁路结构的基础上,创造出凌驾街道上空的立体公园。这是一个体现历时性保护的更新项目，融合了三个历史时期的特征，并将园林与建筑相结合，使其成为一条历史与现代共融、建筑与景观交织的空中绿廊。
自2009年6月空中步道第一部分开放起，就成为城市的主要观光景点之一，是有别于普通公园的独特公共空间。这个公共空间把生机勃勃的植物和狭长的木板融为一体，构成一条平滑流畅、几乎没有空隙的行走路面。铁轨依然是主要元素,引导着参观流线。公园还保留了大约二十种自生植物, 一年四季花卉盛开。还包含水景，观景平台和日光浴平台，还有一块聚集区可用于表演，艺术展览和教育项目。多孔的步道含有敞开式接口以便水流在木板之间排出，灌溉周边的花坛，减少从步道流入下水道系统的雨水量。
空中步道是纽约西区工业化历史的一座纪念碑。它提供了机会创造一个崭新的极具创意的公共空间，与传统的政府和开发商主导的模式不同, 空中步道主要源自于一个以社区为基础的非盈利组织——“空中步道之友” , 在保护、再开发及后期管理过程中发挥着积极作用，为其他城市的工业废弃地的重新使用提供了一种新模式。

The High Line is an expanse of public green space built on pre-existing industrial infrastructure. Previously an abandoned elevated railway, the structure provided the basic framework for the resulting continuous stretch of park above the street. The project weds together historic protection with neighborhood renewal, architectural form with landscape, and the built environment with the resuscitating air.
From the day the first section of the High Line opened in June 2009 it has been one of the city's major tourist destinations-- a unique public space different from any other park. Plant life fills the spaces between the narrow railroad ties, forming a smooth, linear, virtually seamless walking surface. The railroad tracks themselves are a prominent visual feature ushering visitors forward. Approximately twenty varieties of perennials bloom throughout the year. Public amenities on the High Line include a water fountain, viewing platforms, a sundeck, and gathering areas available for performances, art exhibitions and educational programs. Rain water that would otherwise spill off the pavement is channeled through porous pathways and open joints into the plant beds, thereby reducing strain on local storm-sewers.
The High Line is a monument to the industrial history of New York's West Side. Compared with the routine development practices of government and private developers, it exemplifies an innovative way to create public space. The High Line was realized mainly through the efforts of a community-based nonprofit organization. “Friends of the High Line”, which continues to play an active role in the protection, development and management of the project. It also serves as a model of civic action for others who see opportunity in abandoned industrial sites in other cities.
